A passionate, fragmentary girl, maybe?

SHE IS AN HONORABLE WOMAN AND SHE SHALL BE ONE TO THE END OF HER DAYS

SHE IS AN HONORABLE WOMAN AND SHE SHALL BE ONE TO THE END OF HER DAYS

The Stoning of Soraya is a nonfictional book that was published by the Franco-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam in 1990. As indicated in its title, the book reports one of the most crucial cases that women faced in Iran during that time, which is stoning ( propably still do ? ). Noted that over fifteen years back then, more than 1000 women have been stoned to death ,Soraya Manutcherhri is one of them.

Zahra khanum, Soraya's aunt, meets the journalist while his visit to her small village in rural Iran. She tells him the story of her niece Soraya, who was a victim of stoning because of her wicked husband.

Soraya was a faithful honorable woman, married to Ghorban Ali, and a mother of nine children. After years of her arranged marriage, her husband decides to abandon her to marry another fourteen year old (woman?) who lives in the city. Ghorban Ali couldn't afford having two families to (financially) take care of, so he decides to divorce Soraya if he provides no financial help to her after that. Soraya cannot afford life as well, along with her children, so she refuses the divorce deal and decides to keep living with her brutal heartless husband. That is when Ghorban Ali starts plotting to get rid of Soraya.

In the same timeline of the story, Soraya's best friend dies, and her family is left with no care. So, Soraya is sent by the mullah of the village to work in her friend's house. Her husband was the one behind sending her there in order to accuse her of adultery. Needless to mention that the village was under complete male dominance, Ghorban Ali's accusations towards his wife were accepted without proves. That is when the mullah has decided to stand with the husband against Soraya and decides to stone her.

No matter what Soraya said or was willing to say to defend herself, she was not heard. She was dragged into a hole and stoned by her husband; two kids, her father, and the rest of the villagers.

No words can describe the injustices that result from the misunderstanding of Islam  and the crimes committed in the name of it. Soraya died, but her story should be remembered. A highly recommended reading.
